Anyone who produces waste at work has duties defined in s34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. These are legally binding and it is a criminal offence not to fulfil them.
This legislation carries a due diligence clause, which means that employers must devise a system for removal of waste to meet legislation, and check that the system is effective.

Is the way in which your waste treated the most cost-effective?
There have been many changes in technology and legal requirements. The government has already pledged to significantly increase the fee for landfill to encourage employers to use other methods of waste management.

Is the waste you generate segregated into separate waste streams?
By segregating waste into different streams it may be possible to re-use some of the waste or sell it to other companies as a raw material. The Landfill Regulations require waste to be segregated and pre-treated before disposal.
