The importance of risk management training
The ability to identify, understand and manage risk is now recognised as an important and vital leadership skill, critical to running a business, and is a key element in Corporate Governance. Directors have legal responsibilities to report to their shareholders and stakeholders that the organisation is being run properly and that their interests are being protected. Organisations must understand the risks and uncertainty it faces and put in place an effective risk management system.
Potential benefits of an effective risk management programme include:
• Maximising company profitability and ensuring business continuity
• Enhancing reputation, maintaining shareholder and market share
• Improved and better informed decision making leading to improved ability to take risks and exploit opportunities (it's not all about avoiding risk!)
• Ability to report to shareholders that the company is meeting corporate governance requirements set out in the Combined Code
Risk management is not a discipline which is left to one individual or function; it must be embedded into the normal business processes you have in place. An essential element to achieveing this is to have appropriately trained staff, something which the Combined Code makes clear. Training helps develop a risk aware culture by harmonising the risk-assessment process across various disciplines and developing key competencies within the management team. Certified competence in a shared process also improves capacity to deliver internal mutual support.
