IOSH Managing Safely Recertification

Introduction

This course is designed for anyone who has already successfully completed the IOSH Managing Safely and needs to keep their knowledge and skills updated. Successful conclusion of the course will lead to IOSH re-certification.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who has successfully completed the IOSH Managing Safely course (IOSH recommend that knowledge is topped up every three years)

Exam Format

There is a multi-choice examination at the end, comprising 13 questions. No project work is required for the re-certification course.

Course content

Module 1 – managing safely - Introduction and revision of key management principles.

  • a recognized Safety Management System, e.g. HSG65, OHSAS 18001, or either of the systems described in BS 8800
  • a suitable model linking risk assessment with the Safety Management System described

Module 2 – reactive monitoring

  • conduct adequate investigations of non-compliance with safety standards
    what is meant by non-compliance with safety standards
  • the importance of investigating non-compliance with safety standards

Module 3 – risk assessment and risk control

  • make an inventory of sources of hazards
  • keep this inventory up to date
  • identify hazards associated with each source
  • rate the risk associated with each hazard
  • select appropriate workplace precautions for specific risks
  • record the results of risk assessments
  • review risk assessments at appropriate intervals

Module 4 – health and safety legislation

  • identify recent changes and updates to health and safety legislation of relevance to their responsibilities

Module 5 – common hazards

  • identification ofo a range of hazards by applying general principles
  • stress at work
  • lone working
  • violence and aggression at work

Module 6 – active monitoring

  • prepare and use appropriate active monitoring checklists and reminders
  • prepare and implement appropriate schedules for active monitoring
  • record results of active monitoring
  • analyse active monitoring records to identify performance trends
  • analyse active monitoring records to identify patterns of occurrence
  • the purpose and techniques of active monitoring
  • the methods of developing and maintaining checklists and reminders
  • the methods of developing and maintaining schedules for active monitoring
  • date required for an adequate record of active monitoring

Module 7 – safety management systems

  • what is meant by ‘safety culture’
  • how safety culture is measured
  • how to influence safety culture

Module 8 – protecting your environment

  • describe what is meant by the environment
  • discuss the three different types of pollution – air, water, land
  • demonstrate how organisations can help to reduce pollution using the four steps: prevention, reduce, respond and correct
  • explain the requirement for companies to have emergency planning and emergency procedures in place and regular practice drills
  • acknowledge the role and powers of enforcement officers
  • look at how individuals can help to reduce pollution and waste

Module 9 – hazards (client specific where the course is held in-house)

  • the nature of the losses arising from listed hazard sources and the casual mechanisms for these losses.
  • specific hazard identification and risk rating techniques as appropriate
  • the most effective workplace precautions and Risk Control Systems (RCS) for specific risks and how these are implemented
  • specific monitoring and review requirements
