Level 3 Award in Risk Assessment Principles and Practice
Introduction
Employers and the self employed have a legal duty to make suitable and sufficient assessments of health and safety risks. Regulations require that individuals carrying out risk assessments must be competent to do so and therefore have the necessary knowledge and skills.
This course is independently accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
Who is this course for?
Those who have a responsibility to conduct a risk assessment, or is involved in the risk assessment process and seek to be recognised as “competent".

Successful completion helps to demonstrate that the assessors have reached a recognised standard of competence
Learning Objectives
Successful completion of the training programme, self-evaluation and assignment will enable candidates to
- Conduct risk assessments to meet legal requirements in their workplaces
- Be able to understand and evaluate key issues and benefits of risk assessment
- Understand how to quantify risk
- Recommend suitable controls to eliminate or control risks and use the recommended technique
- Be able to document risk assessments
- Be able to monitor and review risk assessments and their progress
Who should attend?
Anyone with a responsibility to conduct risk assessments, particularly managers and supervisors.
Individual workers, team leaders, technicians, engineers or any other personnel contributing to the risk assessment process

- Health and safety law and risk assessment
- Principles of risk assessment (definitions, hazard, risk, control measures)
- Benefits of risk assessment
- How to quantify risk
- Managing & recording risk assessments (eliminate/control/hierarchy of control of risk)
- Identifying training needs in line with the risks assessed
- Monitoring and reviewing assessments
- Post course - delegates are required to complete and submit a risk assessment within two months of completing the course. This can be of their own workplace, documented in report format which will be independently assessed by the CIEH
