The Hyelm Group provides high standards of accommodation, services and facilities for London’s key workers and for young people on low to moderate incomes working or studying in the capital. Envex first started working with Hyelm in 2003 when they realised that they needed some external expert support. Initially we were asked to come in to help manage their legionella risk but since then we have developed a partnership approach and have helped them implement a comprehensive health and safety management system working to a philosophy of continuous improvement. The Hyelm Group are now supported under our Appointed Safety Advisor service to ensure a they maintain high standards achieved. Consultancy has been provided in the following areas:-
General risk audits across the business; Initially a baseline audit was done to clearly understand where they were in order to develop a Group Management Action Plan. We then produced, and have updated regularly, premises specific General Risk Assessments and associated action plans to help deliver significant improvements in safety management.
Based on the findings of the risk audit we developed bespoke Health & Safety Policies & procedures, using Hyelm’s in-house policy style to achieve consistency with other policies and procedures. We now ensure policies stay up to date and we also periodically review and update tenants’ handbooks on health and safety issues.
We conducted a program of specific risk assessments including:-
- Fire risk assessments (reviewed by Fire Brigade with positive comments) to meet the requirements of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005; periodically reviewed with updated management action plans supported by training of fire wardens and general staff on fire safety.
- Legionella risk assessments for their premises leading to the production of a written scheme for ongoing management. Thereafter we have reviewed these risk assessments in-line with the Approved Code of Practice L8, provided periodic oversight of contractors as well as providing guidance on contract specifications to ensure the Group’s needs were met fully.
- Conducting COSHH & Manual Handling risk assessments for housekeeping staff
- Conducting risk assessments on key risk areas e.g. running a resident’s bar & parties for residents
- Use of high level terraces by residents e.g. slips & trips, falls, BBQs, security, safety of the public below
- Falls from windows using the Housing H&S Rating System
Review of contractor management systems including Permit to Work and other safe systems of work to ensure risk is properly managed and to ensure best value is delivered at the required safety standard e.g. Legionella, cleaning, kitchen/catering provision.
Stress at work: we have provided guidance on stress policies and the HSE’s stress management initiatives
The delivery of a broad spectrum of bespoke H&S Training: including General H&S for Managers, Principles and Practice of Risk Assessment for Duty Managers, General H&S for staff, Manual Handling training for staff, Legionella Responsible Person, DSE awareness and Fire Safety.
We provided significant assistance during the development and construction of Hyelm’s a new Key Worker development in West London. Advice was provided on specific safety issues at the design stage, during construction and importantly during the snagging phase to ensure that the contractor delivered to specification on safety related issues and of course that the Hyelm got what it paid for.
